UPC is still in alliance with CPDM: endorsement of Akere Muna’s Presidential Candidacy by some UPC Members is invalid

Honourable Robert Bapooh Lipot, Secretary General of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC) political party says it is invalid for some members of the UPC to support Barrister Akere Muna as candidate for the 2025 presidential elections. He was speaking on October 4, 2024 in Yaounde while leading a delegation to officially renew the stands of the UPC before the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji.

The Secretary General of the UPC party officially renewed the party’s loyalty and fidelity to the ruling CPDM party by handing a sealed note carrying the agreement earlier signed in 2007 stating the party’s alliance with the CPDM. With this he said the UPC is legitimately still in coalition with the CPDM thus it is outlawed for some UPC members to stage a coalition with any another political party. “We are here to reaffirm our support to President Paul Biya and let the entire nation know that we are giving our support to President Paul Biya during the upcoming Presidential elections and this is what was decided by the Secretary General… Frederick and also by the Congress that elected me as Secretary General of the UPC and prove that we renew our alliance with the CPDM and this is the only alliance that the UPC has.”

“We want to let the entire nation to know that if someone is wearing the clothes or anything concerning the UPC and is saying that he is giving the support of the UPC to another political party this is wrong””We reassure the entire nation today that the only alliance which the UPC has is the alliance with the CPDM and also that for the next presidential elections, we are going to support the candidate of the CPDM … We are for president Paul Biya. We are going to move on with president Paul Biya” Hon. Robert Bapooh Lipot made the pronouncement before the press.

Mr. Lipot said the UPC continues to stand with President Paul Biya who has made it possible for UPC martyrs to be celebrated in Cameroon including heroes like Ruben Um Nyobé, Laurent-Félix Moumié, Ernest Ouandié and Abel Kingué. He went ahead to note that it is thanks to President Paul Biya that the UPC is now represented in the Senate of Cameroon.

The pronouncement by the UPC S.G is a reaction to the announcement of Barrister Akere Muna’s presidential candidacy in which the UPC was presented as one of the parties to have endorsed the barrister.
