Staff and students of the Nigerian Military College of Logistics and Management, September 12, 2024, made a field trip to the Cameroon telecommunications company (CAMTEL) in a search to widen their knowledge on cyber security.
On behalf of the Director General, Judith Yah Sunday, Mr.Francis Ottou, Technical Adviser No 1 of CAMTEL received the staff and students of the war college who stepped out of the theoretical classroom work to the field in order to broaden their understanding of security issues. This is hinged on the notion that war and security is no longer in the battlefield but cyber space is now a new battle ground with cyber crime as a threat that can destabilize states. The field trip on digital security was also motivated by the fact that Security is not only measured in terms of army And arsenal but in terms of a nation’s ability to deal with all forms of threats.
The field trippers were led by Brigadier General Jib Manjang, Deputy Commander and High Teaching Administrator meanwhile Lietenant Colonel Elikie Awudou played the role of team leader. Speaking while presenting the students, the team leader noted that Cameroon and Nigeria are more of brothers than just neighbouring countries. They share a lot of cooperation in different areas thus the need to strengthen their relationship. Both countries are facing security challenges which behooves them to synergize and fight for their common good. Speaking while receiving the military personnel, the Technical Adviser noted that the field visit is crucial in expanding the knowledge of the military personnel in the domain of cyber security and goes to increase the collaboration between defense and telecommunication for Cameroon and Nigeria, for lasting regional stability. “We are committed to securing our infrastructure and protecting data, aware that every flaw in our network can become a tool in the hands of opposing forces. To this respect, I am convinced that the sharing of experience with our arm forces would enable us to better anticipate and better effectively manage looming threats” Mr. Auto said. A presentation was done by CAMTEL’s Mr Talla Justin on the theme: strengthening national security through regional cooperation and socio economic development. Speaking while presenting, he stated that regional cooperation is important for political integration, peace and security, for socio economic development and for harmony of countries. This is because, no business can take place in an unsecured environment. He quoted the examples of blocs in the world that exist regional cooperation like ECOWAS and ECCAS, noting that Cameroon and Nigeria would continue to share experience for the security of their population, property territory both online and offline.
The field trip was immortalized with the exchange of gifts from both parties and a picture session. The students expressed gratitude for the learning and interactive opportunity which would shape their military career. Added to Nigeria, CAMTEL has received military on field trip from Congo, Gabon, and from military schools in Cameroon. This is within CAMTEL’s motive as key player in the digital economy to better the lives of citizens and maintain digital sovereignty in Cameroon.
