Accelerate Africa Competition: ICT University Graduates Win in Demonstrating Breast Cancer Detect App

Four ICT University graduates are winners of the Cameroon National Pitch Competition, organized by “Accelerate Africa”, a Corporate Finance, investment, advisory and business support Company. Anzia Juvis, Abdoul Azis, Baimam Boukar Jean Jacques and Chendjou Honore, competitively showcased their innovative know by inventing a breast cancer detection application which they titled as “The Intellibra”.

The group of four emerged top among other projects like FinTech, EdTech and climate related issues presented by their peers. They were proclaimed winners by “Accelerate Africa” on February 29th 2024. This win, takes the four to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, for a final stage competition laced with lucrative prizes. Onlookers were marvelled by the devise that detects breast cancer using ultrasound.

Explaining the intellibra, Anzia Juvis, leader of the group of four said “The Intellibra is a kit composed of a portable ultrasound imaging system embedded in a bra with a user-friendly mobile application. The ultrasound device emits waves into breast tissues, captures echoes, and sends the signals to the mobile app. Users can initiate scans, and receive diagnostic insights derived from machine learning algorithms. This comprehensive solution not only facilitates prompt diagnosis but also offers options for medical record storage, sharing, and communication with healthcare professionals”

She went ahead to explain that, the newly produced apparatus for breast cancer diagnosis would meet the needs of average health care communities “By focusing on accessibility and efficient diagnosis, this initiative aspires to significantly impact healthcare in low and middle-income countries, potentially saving lives and addressing the challenges associated with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment”
On how they conceived the app idea, she said the concept developed in their brain thanks to lessons received from “Research Methods in ICT”, one of the courses taken in Level One at the ICT University. “We were asked to find major problems in our society and provide an IT solution to this problem. I did my research and found out about the urgency of finding an alternative way to breast cancer detection. Some time later, a close friend of mine lost his mom because of breast cancer and that gave me a push to further my research till this point. The Intellibra was conceived at the ICT University and through different courses like research methods and programming courses, we got the knowledge needed to build the mobile application to conduct research. Advice from some of our instructors and Dean, helped us to move forward in our findidngs.” Juvis said

This project has catapulted the four ICT University graduates to another competitive phase that shall take place in Dubai. The four winners are also seeking recognition from Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health as well as seeking funds to start with the production of 100 devices of the cancer detection app as well as, get the equipment available for use in different health facilities.
