The successful accomplishment of National Road Number 11 relies on the peaceful collaboration of the population. Thus the engagement of the population is the new strategy being put in place to achieve the road. The Northwest Regional Delegate of Public Works, Ngwaimbi Paul Ayeah revealed the new path in achieving the development during a press conference with Journalists, which took place at the hall of the Regional Delegation of Public Works on January 4, 2024.
Responding to questions posed by journalists on how the project would continue especially given the recorded attack and burning of equipment, the authorities said the new vision of the road would include talking to people’s consciences to give peace a chance, appeasing the angry population through peace talks, training youths for employability into the project as well empowering women to contribute to the construction. In effect, the authorities are appealing for a peaceful support from the population to this project as the benefit will definitely eradicate some challenges in the urban and rural areas. Aside from the road construction, education will be boosted, health standards will be improved upon as well as market construction which will intensify and bring a boom in trade.
Talking about making the population actively involved in the project, the Delegate spoke about youths that would be directly engaged.
“We have youths around 17 councils that are undergoing training for employability. We have UN women empowerment that came in with projects to empower women along the ring road. Besides that, we have socio economic projects that are going to take place in the various council areas. For now I can say we have some urban roads in Nkambe that are already being earmarked for the construction of the ring road that is coming. All the councils are developed through those projects and at the end of the day, other projects like classrooms, schools will follow suit”. The Regional Delegate told journalists, calling on them to relay the information to the public.
Officials charged with the construction expect press men to be ambassadors of peace by using the media to cause the population to be receptive about the road.
The Ring-Road has a length of approximately 365 km. It forms a loop of the Bamenda-Bambui-Ndop-Babessi-Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje-Nyos-Wum-Bafut. It crosses five of the seven Divisions of the Northwest Region and includes several connections to the Nigerian border, notably from Misaje. The programme is structured around the four components, namely road works, related facilities and support for women and youth, institutional support and programme management and coordination.
