President Nguema seeks Biya for Gabon’s Reinstatement into ECCAS

Gabon’s transitional president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, was in Cameroon on December 6th, where he held discussions with Paul Biya, president of Cameroon. Brice Nguema says he used the time spent to ask Biya’s support for Gabon’s restoration into ECCAS. Shortly before his departure flight back to Gabon, Brice said ” I came to discuss with President Paul Biya who is an elder, to employ his clemency so that Gabon can be readmitted into the ECCAS block. It was important for me to visit because I had time to explain the recent happenings in Gabon and president Paul Biya promised his total support for things to return to normal in Gabon. I am totally satisfied especially as an ECCAS meeting is scheduled for the 12th in Malabo” he told the press at the end of his visit in Cameroon.
The president of Gabon also said the encounter with Biya, was to strengthen relations, noting that he is grateful for the hospitality accorded to him “We also discussed the relations between Cameroon and Gabon. I leave, satisfied and full of hope for a renewed cooperation between Yaounde and Libraville”

Gabon was suspended from ECCAS when Nguema used a coup to oust Ali Bongo from the presidency on August 30. This followed with the transfer of the capital of ECCAS from the Gabonese capital Libreville to Equatorial Guinea’s capital Malabo.
Gabon was also barred from the Commonwealth and the A.U and would only be reinstated when constitutional order returns to Gabon.

Nguema’s visit to Cameroon ended a tour that has taken him to Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo.
