MINAT Tasks Governors to Shine Eye in View of Political Calendar

Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, says governors should be vigilant in view of political activities that would begin in 2024 and heighten with presidential elections in 2025. This was one among many subjects during the 2023 Second Bi-annual Governors Conference that spanned from the 19th to the 20th of December in Yaounde.
Cameroon’s political calendar in 2024 would be charged with the reorganisation of political parties and the selection of candidates for the municipal, parliamentary, regional and presidential elections. Based on this the Minister said governors should be vigilant and live up to the expected challenges, monitor NGOs and associations and note suspicious behavior. He went ahead to say the population should be law abiding. “We have many political challenges in 2024 and 2025 so we want to caution the population that they have to work by respecting the law. We have rules and regulations so all stakeholders must abide by the rules and regulations so that we can be friendly with the administration. Obviously if u want to defy state authority you would find us on your road so I want to say that we are confident that the Governors, the S.D.O.s and D.O.s who are all experienced people would accompany the population in all what they are doing so that Cameroon remains a stable, united and peaceful country” the minister said.

A host of other issues affecting the life of the state were examined by the ten governors together with the Minister. These include the increase in the price of certain essential foodstuffs, untimely and prolonged water cuts, electricity cuts, disruptions in the distribution chain of petroleum products, the fight against street drugs and drug consumption, the fight against urban disorder, the resurgence of violence in various forms and feminicide with the killing of eighty women either by male partners or male family relatives. Other issues examined include the proliferation of hate speech and xenophobia, particularly in certain media and social networks, disruptions and turmoil within several churches with some pastors and church elders forgetting their noble mission on the souls of their faithful and engaging in clientelism. Minister Atanga Nji said, this behavior must stop, because churches, like all other institutions are subject to the rule of law.
On femicide, the Minister said family disputes should be resolved through dialogue and men should protect women because killing a wife or partner is a criminal regardless of the reason given. Disorder was also noticed in the area of traditional chiefs and the Minister said From now on, the file on traditional chiefs will be part of the documents to be transmitted during handing over between the outgoing administrative authorities and incoming.

The Conference featured a presentation by the Secretary of State for Defense in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Yves Landry Galax Etoga and the General Delegate for National Security Martin Mbarga Nguele on security measures taken to ensure security during the festive season.

The governors were once more charged with monitoring the execution of development projects, monitoring the activities of associations and NGOs, , the supervision of traditional chiefdom and the investigation of boundary disputes. The Minister also said governors would have to do sensitization to combat hate speech, xenophobia and femicide.

During the Conference of Regional Governors, they examined the implementation of recommendations made during the First Bi-annual Conference. The governors noted that during the last period several awareness-raising actions have been carried out on hate speech and xenophobia. The issue of organised criminals in the Littoral region who branded themselves as “microbes” has been tackled. It was also reported that the general security situation in the entire national territory is under control and the public is enjoying it’s liberties.
