Cameroon Bishops Tell Pope Francis Off Concerning the Blessing of Same Sex Couples

On Monday 18th December 2023, Pope Francis approved the blessing of same sex unions. He said Catholic priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples as long as they are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies. The document argued that such blessings would not legitimise gay marriages but is a sign that God welcomes all persons.

In what appears to be an objection to the Pope’s order, Catholic Bishops in Cameroon have disconnected themselves from administering blessings to same sex unions and have outrightly banned the blessing of homosexuals in Cameroon.

The bishops have unanimously stated that the blessing of homosexual couples is tantamount to encouraging the practice of homosexuality and it is hypocritical.
The Bishops, led by the President of the National Episcopal Conference, His Grace Andrew Nkea, have reaffirmed the position of the Church on homosexuality as well as on the definition of Marraige.

The Bishops however state that they shall continue to offer homosexuals to God in prayers for their repentance.

The position of Cameroon Bishops was issued on December 21st 2023, in a document with the title “DECLARATION OF THE BISHOPS OF CAMEROON ON HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE BLESSING OF “HOMOSEXUAL COUPLES”
