Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, on October 10, 2023, visited some survivors of a mudslide, who are being treated at the Emergency Center of the Yaounde Central Hospital. Ten persons touched by the slide were received at the Emergency Center and two have been discharged. Minister Atanga Nji was taken through the emergency unit by medical personnel who gave him information about the recovery state of the patients. He listened to the sad tale of how buildings collapsed with persons during heavy rainfall on October 8th.
One of the carer givers narrated the sad plight of having lost seven family members as the mudslide encroached their home during a birthday party. Some guests at the birthday celebration also died. Minister Atanga Nji was accompanied during the visit by staff of the Department of Civil Protection, from the Ministry of Territorial Administration who took stock of the situation of patients affected by mudslide. The Civil Protection Workers are mobilising to distribute aid to affected persons.
In a press statement at the end of his sojourn at the Hospital, the Minister expressed hope that, the sick persons would fully recover “We are confident that treatment is being administered properly and in few days, most of the wounded victims, will leave the hospital. It is very traumatizing to hear that in one family, seven people are reported dead. I think what we can say today is to sensitize the population, not to put up structures in areas where we ought not to construct” The mudslide occured on Sunday October 8, at Mbankolo Yaounde, recording several persons injured and 30 deaths.
The mudslide happened when heavy rains set in, and run off from a hill break through the dyke of a lake, submerging houses and destroying property affecting lives along.
