Drivers Refrain from Strike After Being Calmed Down by Minister Atanga Nji

The Drivers were set to go on strike from the 19th of October to protest poor working conditions and irregularities. They deemed that, this would bring about an improvement in working conditions which they said have been persistently raised but have not been granted. The demands include; the signing of the extension of the collective agreement for the transport sector, the integration and reintegration of transport unions in all consultation committees (like the National Commission for the Fight against clandestine road transport, the national committee for road safety and prevention) the instilling of order for an end to bias in issuing identification, the reintegration of Driver’s unions into the body that evaluates certificates of competence, the updating of the joint MINT-MINAT decree establishing special brigades to combat illegal road transport, the integration of unions in road safety and the elimination of irregularities in the issuance or extensions of driving licenses.

Minister Atanga Nji Paul, of Territorial Administration, had a three day meeting with the drivers to listen to their worries. During the meeting from the 13th to the 15th of October, he examined each demand of the drivers and assured them that, he would channel their request to the Head of State for solutions to the problems raised. He calmed the drivers down, cautioning them that, a well intended strike action may produce unintended outcomes.

Meantime, the drivers have issued a document, calling off the strike, hoping that they will receive positive feedback concerning problems raised. The document carries signatures of different union leaders of the Driving sector.

Talking to the press, Nymeck Ntamak, president of the General Confederation of Transport Unions of Cameroon (CGSTC) said “We are very delighted because our grievances have been transmitted directly to the head of state by the Minister of Territorial Administration. We remain confident and serene and we affirm that the Strike is lifted”

After discussing with the Minister of Territorial Administration, the Drivers handed him a letter of gratitude to give to the Head of State. In the letter, they expressed that, the Head of State initiated social dialogue and peace in solving their problems by assigning the Minister of Territorial Administration to chat things with them.
