Bikers asked to Comply or Face Sanction

Commercial bike riders in Yaounde and Douala have been given up to October 30, 2023 to be regular with the law, within their profession. Each bike rider must possess an immatriculation number from the Ministry of Transport, an identification number from the syndicate, a National Identity card, an identity jacket from the council and a Driving licence. Those involved in importation or selling of bikes are also obliged to register all bikes being sold.
This was the message from Cameroon’s Interior Minister, Atanga Nji Paul, during a working session, held on September 26th, 2023, in Yaounde, to restore sanity among bikers.
The stricter measure to be applied on commercial motorcyclists is prompted by insanity in that sector.
“during the months of August and September 2023 alone, more than 700 cases of assault, 300 cases of rape, 110 route diversions, 900 cases of serious accidents, some of whose victims are permanently disabled have been reported” the minister said during the meeting.
Mr Atanga Nji, said “such acts are unacceptable and will now be repressed without complacency or weakness, taking into account the laws of the Republic”
The meeting also addressed truckers who protested against taxes imposed on them, notably, on September 20th. The protest was staged by using their trucks to block the road from Olembe in Yaounde that leads to the West Region.
The minister condemned this act which resulted in the death of a sick person, whose ambulance could not use the road due to blockage.
“No one has the right to take the law into their own hands and this is a warning to recalcitrant truckers. If you have a grievance, you must raise it responsibly with the competent authorities, Divisional Officer, Senior Divisional Officer, Governor and even with those in charge of law enforcement forces. These civil servants of the Republic will transmit your grievances to those concerned and appropriate solutions will be found according to the Government’s priorities” he cautioned.
Both Leaders of bike riders unions and truck unions who attended the meeting, agreed to comply with the law. They however voiced their plea of constant support from the government in areas where they face difficulty.
