The Belo Municipal Council led by Mayor Ngong Innocent, meritoriously came on the fourth position among five excellent councils during the 2023 International Economic Forum for Councils, JEICOM. The forum organised for Councils in Cameroon, took place from June 1st to 3rd 2023 at the Yaounde Conference Center and brought together three hundred and seventy four councils to exhibit their economic power where in Belo Council ranked forth among five municipal councils that performed well.
Mayor Ngong Innocent of Belo Council together with his fellow councillors engraved Belo’s economic image at JEICOM which earned them recognition among the top five.
At JEICOM, Belo council presented it’s rich economic items like tea, honey, irish potatoes, books with information on the scope of the council, traditional music and diverse cultural items like cultural regalia, cowries, walking staffs, nenecklaces and bracelets among many other works of craft.
The ranking was done by the Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development who proclaimed and rewarded the top five Councils; there were the Bafoussam Council, Douala 5 Council, Bibeni Council, Belo Council and Olanguina Council.
Speaking to the press after getting recognition among the top five, the Mayor of Belo Council said all items presented by Belo Council at JEICOM was from the hand work of men and women in Belo, which was intended to cherish their work.
“The first thing is that we wanted to appreciate the work of our mothers, youths, and fathers in the village. Those who are producing tea; there are so many of them recruited in the Ndawara Tea Estate. Those who are producing honey; there are a lot of associations producing honey and those who are producing the traditional regalia, there are so many of them. So, our coming here is mainly to appreciate their work. Let them feel proud of what they are doing. When they will discover that the whole country is consuming what they are producing from Belo, they would be very happy. So, our secret here was just to present what our people are doing back in Belo, so that they should feel proud of what they are doing. When a lady cooks food, she’s happy when people eat and appreciate the food. So we are consuming the products of our people, the good citizens in Belo, and they should be very proud. The ladies producing potatoes, those keeping bee hives, those knitting traditional embroidery, they should be very proud their products have been appreciated in Cameroon and worldwide” the Mayor said.
According to Mayor Ngong Innocent, the exhibitions at JEICOM has a correlation with the people of Belo and represent the their lifestyle.
“After drinking our tea we go to our farm and farm potatoes and when we come back, we still eat the same potatoes. When there is a ceremony we wear our traditional dress. That’s what we are presenting to the JEICOM economic business fare. We are presenting our tea, we are presenting our honey, we are presenting our potatoes, which can be transformed into chips, flour, and we are presenting our traditional regalia, that is, the traditional embroidery industry which has grown so much to be representing Cameroon and Africa as a whole” Mayor Ngong spoke, regarding the correlation of the products exhibited at JEICOM.
The 2023 International Economic Forum for Councils enabled Belo Council to engage with over four hundred business partners from France, Belgium, Vietnam, Turkey and Cameroon. The Council hopes that relations with new found partners would fruitfully impact the life of Belo Municipality.
Belo Municipality is conterminous with the Belo Sub Division, of Boyo Division, Northwest Region of Cameroon.
