ICT UNIVERSITY: 250 STUDENTS INITIATED INTO IT BASED ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Two hundred and fifty freshmen have taken matriculation oath, at the Information and Communication Technology University (ICT University).


The matriculation ceremony which marked the formal initiation of students into the school took place at the ICT University campus on April 20, 2023, presided by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr Alain Vilard, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi. It was the twelfth matriculation batch.


The formal rituals of the ceremony was respected with the procession of the Vice Chancellors, Deans, Doctors, Professors and students with the mast of the ICT University held out. The matriculation rites also involved the swearing of students to abide by the rules of the university, obey the Vice Chancellor and faithfully do all that is required. After the oath, they were formally admitted into the school.

A welcome address by means of zoom from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi, set the ball rolling. The Students were then addressed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics who said matriculation into the ICT University implies that, the students are in essence being initiated into a system of professionalism and entrepreneurship that is interwoven with ICT. He said the ICT University provides a platform for inclusive education.

“This day we are passing a strong message to the students that the ICT University is a place of reputation. A place where we respect academic records. We have put in place a mechanism to ensure that all our students coming in, this semester, must acquire ICT skills to build their potentials. So we are promoting professionalism and ICT integration in all disciplines of the academy. In ICT University entrepreneurship has a different name. It is called Business Innovation Entrepreneurship. The ICT University is broken into three semesters. The first semester is about course work. The second semester is seminars and workshops and the last semester is business plan. Every student be it at bachelors, masters or PhD must take a compulsory university requirement course to build capacity, to create business after graduation ” Dr Alain Vilard said during the ceremony.

The Dean of the Faculty of Business Management and Sustainability gave an academic discuss on digital transformation where he pointed out that digital transformation can reduce cost in accessing public services, facilitate interaction, improve learning systems and ameliorate life.

A keynote address by Mrs Gwendoline Abunaw, CEO of ECO Bank encouraged students to study with an entrepreneurial mindset. Her presentation was titled “an entrepreneur’s mind is the entrepreneur’s might”. In it, she counselled students to be self motivated, creative, curious, associate with people who have an entrepreneurial mindset and embrace mistakes.

There was also a virtual presentation by Professor Victor W. Mbarika,
Founder and President of the Board of Trustees of the ICT University. He encouraged students to gainfully use the infrastructure and programs available in the ICT University, work hard and freely interact with lecturers and the administration. He also cautioned the students against bad behavior.

Professor Fonkoa, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration and Registrar further encouraged the students and told them to avail themselves of the offers in the higher institute.

Talking to some of the students during the event, they expressed confidence to acquire their goals in the ICT University.
Enow Arrey of the Faculty of Business Management and Sustainable Development said “My hopes and aspiration after completing this course is to get out with an entrepreneural mindset like our keynote speaker, Mrs Gwendoline Abunaw, spoke to us. I want to be able to build capacity to solve Africa’s problems in the business world, in conjunction with Information Technology. I hope to acquire this, seeing that there is enough infrastructure and the technology is available. I am quite confident that at the end of the eight semesters when completing my bachelor’s degree, I will have acquired those skills”

Nouyeutchui Brondon, student of the school of Information System and Network said “I decided to come to the ICT University because i desire communication networking and Information and Communication Technology.
Coming here I hope to acquire all the necessary knowledge to realise those dreams. My dream is to become a network engineer”
Thursday’s event marked the twelfth batch of matriculating students who are taking courses in various schools within the Faculty of information and Communication Technology ICT and the Faculty of Business Management and Sustainable Development BMS.
