Members of the senate in Cameroon received symbols of their office during a session at the Yaounde conference center on April 15, 2023. The session was chaired by Rene Ze Nguele, Eldest Member of the house who began by addressing the house where he welcomed members and guests.
Names of all one hundred senators were read.
This followed with a distribution of emblems, signifying the office of a senator. These were a tricolour sache with the colours of the Cameroon Flag, an Insignia which would be attached around the breast on their dress and a tricolour cockade which would be put on their vehicles.
In essence, the symbols identify a senator and his role.
The senate is the upper chamber of parliament in Cameroon made up of one hundred seats. The senate is a democratic institution. Seventy members of the senate are elected by councilors while thirty others are appointed by the president of the Republic of Cameroon.
Senators have the duty to accelerate the decentralisation process, with regards to the law. They have the statutory duty to vote laws and control government action. They have the duty to collaborate with decentralised local and regional authorities to fast track government action and meet the aspirations of local communities. They are supposed to participate in Council sessions and collaborate with locally elected officials. Generally, senators represent Regional and Local Authorities with the view to ensure the social, political and economic welfare of regional and local territories.
The Yaounde conference center vibrated with joy as hundreds of persons thronged the event side to witness the distribution of insignias to senators. Family members, friends and well wishers turned out in elegant clothes, some carrying bouquet of flowers for the senators. Cultural dance groups were also present to hail the senators. Many took pictures to keep the day indelible.
Various senators shared their joy and aspiration as they take up mandate.
Senator Fon, Lekunze Andreas Nembo, from the South West in Lebialem Division said “My impressions are exceedingly positive because the spirit of democracy in Cameroon and the process of decentralisation is on the positive mood and i want to underscore here that the acceleration of the decentration process that is going to bring greater powers to the people is going to come from the senors who are representatives of decentralised territorial collectivities and it our duty to ensure that Cameroonians at the lowest part of the suburb enjoy the national cake”
Senator Fointama Hilda Aluma from Boyo Division said “I am so happy for this wonderful privilege that God has given me to be made a senator in Cameroon. I know much has been given in my hands and i am going in with a lot of steam and energy to ne able to impact my soceity especially the girl child and the woman.
i want to encourage other women. I want to encourage other women to work very hard to come up to this position that i find myself”
