NSIF on Nationwide Campaign to Register Domestic Workers

Ignorance and negligence account for reasons why several domestic workers are not covered by social protection.
The Cameroon National Social Insurance Fund (NSIF) is currently on a campaign to register domestic servants, to ensure that they are socially secured.

Madame Nyuyse Nsam Theresia, is the Chief of the Social Insurance Fund Center at Mvogbi, Yaounde, Cameroon. In a chat with Cameroon Infotrend. She explained the reason for carrying out a nationwide campaign to register domestic workers.
“When I say domestic servants I mean the staff that works in our homes for example the driver, the cook, the night watch, the day watch. We are focused on this category of staff because following our analysis of our database, we realize that it’s a category that has really been neglected for awhile irrespective of the fact that they are also workers as prescribed by section, of the labour code. So the general manager has put in place this campaign nation wide so that this group that is really not favoured as regards to social insurance legislation should be covered.” She said.

“Most of these workers who don’t live with us have to move from their homes to their work places. Some of them take bikes to come to their work places. They may be victims of road accidents when they are going to work. If they have an accident and they are not able to work any more, the NSIF has the obligation to take care of them during their period of absence from work. So it is very important. The cook in your house who is exposed to a fire is a work accident. When they are registered, the CNPS comes in to take care of their salaries, during the time that they are not working. The lady who is a worker, who gives birth to children, the CNPS takes care of her maternity benefits. So these are advantages that are available for these workers of this category”
Madame Nyuyse said in relation with the decision to ensure registration of domestic workers into the NSIF.

When registered with the National Social Insurance Fund, a domestic worker who is of child bearing age has access to family benefits of 1800frs every month per child which is paid directly through mobile phone, abd is received in the receiver’s phone.

He/she has the advantage of having retirement benefits when he goes on retirement eventually. If he doesn’t have the required number of insurance months to have a pension, he/she is placed on a pension allowance.

The campaign to register domestic workers with the National Social Insurance Fund is a mobile outdoor campaign. Personnel of NSIF are reaching out to all institutions in Cameroon, sensitizing people on the need to register domestic staff.
