The food and beverage company known as Nestlé, has refuted false claims related to the consumption of Maggi. The company also orientated women on the correct use of the food seasoning brand known as Maggi. This formed part of activities by Nestlé, to celebrate the 38th edition of the international Women’s Day in Yaounde on March 11, 2023 at Club CAMTEL, Draguage.
Nestlé brought together women from all walks of life to celebrate women’s day while using the time to sensitize them on the correct use of Maggi in food preparation.
To showcase the right use of Maggi in cooking, six teams from six health centers took part in a cooking competition, using different Maggi seasonings. The aim was to empower women with better daily choices of food, and the right quantity of Maggi to use for healthy living.
While the teams were in the kitchen, competing in cooking, nutritionists and culinary experts cautioned women on how Maggi should be used with regards to health and age.
In a lecture, Culinary Category Development Manager, Ngo Mooh Madeleine took the stage and told women that “For a balanced diet, we need to eat 25% of protein, 25% of carbohydrates and 50% of vegetables. Our traditional meals are our culture and we must nourish our bodies with meals which make up the DNA of the Cameroonian culinary. This of course must be done with moderation. To prepare a meal for six persons, we are encouraged to use 5 Maggi cubes or two tablets without salt because Maggi contains salt, 1kg of meat and 1½ liter of broth.” said Mrs Ngo Mooh Magdeleine, the Culinary Category Development Manager. We must be careful with the way we cook. People go around eating the wrong foods and end up blaming Maggi for making them sick.” She concluded
Samuel Fotso, is a nutritionist who at the event emphasized on the need of using the specified quantity of Maggi, in food preparation. He said “We are advised to use five cubes of Maggi when cooking a meal for six persons. People of age should consume half a cube a day in their meals, without salt” He said.
Lovelyn Tambang, Application Group and Packaging Manager in charge of Recipe Management, Innovation and Packaging with Nestlé, dismissed the claims that Maggi is a poisonous substance. “Today on social media you hear people say Maggi is produced with formol and other dangerous substances but that is false information. Maggi is produced with natural ingredients which we can easily find in our kitchen like onions, garlic, palm oil, salt and ingredients you would find in our common market. We have no artificial materials in our product and we follow the guidelines of WHO. All what we do is for safety of our lifestyle”. She explained that, Maggi is made of 50% salt which has a balanced proportion of sodium needed by the human body. Mrs. Lovelyn went ahead to say that, the high presence of this sodium proportion found in crude salt is what usually makes people ill, as the salt is not neutralized and fit for human consumption. She stressed that it is either you use Maggi or salt when cooking. She said people should either use one or the other, not both because Maggi contains salt.
The experts said Nestlé is continuously working on improving the nutritional value of it’s products and has been intentional about reducing salt and focusing on natural ingredients instead when producing Maggi
A dance competition with Maggi products made the day colourful. Prizes were awarded to best dancers. Contesters in the cooking competition also took prizes home.
Participants agreed that the exercise is a lesson. One of the competitors, Doctor Zebaze Sonia of Hope Services Health Centre said “this competition has helped women to know how to use Maggi properly. Despite all the truth and lies told about Maggi, it has helped them to know how to use it moderately, for the health of everyone and their family members”, said Dr. Zebaze.
On her part, Alma of Efoulan District Hospital shared her experience during the cooking competition “It was a good experience. There are many ways to use Maggi crayfish and we used just one cube to prepare a fruit cocktail. What kills people is the quantity of salt they consume. We are encouraged to use just a little portion of Maggi to season our food” she said.
All participants at the women’s day celebration organised by Nestlé were offered gifts. They took home bowls, buckets, Maggi seasoning cubes and baby food known as Cerelac. All of them smiled home with the knowledge and the gifts received.
