Cameroon’s Constitutional Council Dismisses Petitions by Dissatisfied Politicians, 10 Parties to Compete for 70 Seats

The constitutional Council has rejected all 13 petitions, filed by six political parties with regards to what the parties viewed as irregularities. Members of the constitutional Council examined petitions relating to the rejection or acceptance of candidates for the March the 12, 2023 elections of senators and then gave their final judgement for the March 12, 2023 elections of candidates.

Wednesday February 15, was the day for the Constitutional Council to release it’s verdict after studying files tabled by the various political parties with regards to the elections. Thirteen files were earlier tabled with complains regarding the choice of candidates, the illegality of candidates to contest or irregularities with geopolitics.
After scrutinizing complains submitted, the Constitutional Council headed by its president Atangana Clement
gave its verdict in the presence of representatives of political parties, officials of Elections Cameroon and officials of the Ministry of Territorial Administration. The constitutional Council gave it’s verdict after after hearings, examination and deliberations.

The Verdict

The UPC petitioned for their list to be reinstalled in the center region but this was ruled out by the Constitutional Council because their files were not regular.

The Cameroon Youth Democratic Party also requested to be reinstalled in the center region but they were rejected for having incomplete files.

The constitutional Council has rejected the files of the SDF in North-west regions requesting the cancellation of the CPDM list for the none respect of the deadline for the submission of petitions.

The Constitutional Council has rejected the appeal by the UNDP party to reject the CPDM list in the Adamawa region where a candidate was accused of having a fake birth certificate.

Similarly, the Constitutional Council has refused to cancel the UNDP list in the Adamawa region.

The Constitutional Council ruled against a said Ahmadou Ajidjo, of the CPDM party who protested against the list submitted by the party. He was simply told by the Constitutional Council that matters of internal conflict ought to be handled by the party.

The same scenario about internal party issues was presented by a member of the MDR party who was dissatisfied with some candidates vying for Senatorial Elections in the party. She was also told by the Constitutional Council that it is a matter yo be handled within the party.

Officials hold that the rulings of the constitutional Council was in accordance with the law to ensure a credible and fair elections
Meantime the date of the senatorial elections stands on March 12, 2023 where regional and municipal councillors would be going to the polls to elect members of the Upper House of Parliament for Cameroon.

Ten political parties would compete for seventy elective seats across ten regions of the country as follows

Adamawa Region: CPDM, UNDP

Centre Region: CPDM, FDC

East Region: CPDM, UNDP

Far North Region: ANDP, CPDM, UNDP, MDR

Littoral Region: CPDM, PCRN

North Region: FSNC CPDM UNDP

North West: CPDM, SDF

West Region: CPDM, UDC, UMS

South Region: CPDM

South West Region: CPDM
