Hereditary chiefs

His Majesty Nandjou Clarence becomes one of many hereditary traditional chiefs. In most indigenous settings, chieftain is hereditary. Hereditary chiefs inherit the title and responsibilities according to the history and cultural values of the community.
Their governing principles are anchored in their cultural traditions. Such chiefs are often drawn from the family line. Hereditary chiefs are often recognized as traditional knowledge keepers, and in some contexts are recognized as having greater authority and rights relative to things like traditional territory or cultural knowledge and tradition. They are often recognized as the choice of the ancestors as opposed to elected chiefs
