Nigerian Refugees Return Home Safely from Cameroon

Eight hundred and fifty five Nigerian refugees who were repatriated from Cameroon have been received in their country. The refugees accompanied by security officials of Cameroon were handed over to the government of Nigeria by the Governor of the Far North Region of Cameroon, Midjiyawa Bakari. They were welcomed on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, by Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State. While receiving them, Mr Zulum thanked officials including Cameroon’s Head of State for accommodating the displaced persons for over nine years.

After a safe arrival, they were screened at a transit center by Migration police of Nigeria and then installed in a host camp in Banki Nigeria. The Federal Government of Nigeria gave to each refugee N40,000, 50kg of rice, 10kg of beans, 5 litres of cooking oil, a carton of seasoning, a wrapper, and N60,000 per household.

As they left the Minawao refugee Camp in the Far North region of Cameroon, they equally received gifts from the president of Cameroon. Each refugee while returning received 1 mattress, 1 blanket, 3 buckets, 1 bag of corn or 50 kg of millet, 50 kg of rice, 1 kettle, 20 pieces of soap and 5 bottles of vegetable oil.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) working in Cameroon, led by Kimberly Roberson commended Cameroon for hosting the refugees “We say
thank you to the Cameroonian people
for their legendary hospitality. We also thank the Cameroonian government and its president, His Excellency Paul Biya, for the multifaceted support provided to our fellow citizens during their stay in Cameroon” she said.

The former refugees who have returned home were forced to flee their country, taking refuge in Cameroon mostly due to boko Haram insurgency, farmer-herder conflict and banditry.
