EYDA Assists 500 Persons Displaced by Farmer/Grazier Conflicts

Members of the Esu Youth Development Association -EYDA have shown compassion to over five hundred persons dispersed by farmer/grazier conflicts. EYDA provided assistance to Internally displaced persons from four communities who are taking refuge in Esu. The IDPs from the communities of Itsem, Munka, Gayama and Munkep received foodstuff from EYDA on January 22nd, 2023 at the Esu Palace Hall.

The offer include soap, rice, salt and seasoning cubes. A communique from the EYDA Secretariat, reads that “the gifts cost four hundred thousand francs”. They were handed to the victims of conflict by a team from the executive bureau of Eyda led by the first National Project Coordinator -Nfua Obert. The gifts were handed in the presence of executive members of Esu Cultural Development Association ECUDA and the Village Council Chairman Tem Venasius.

Gedion Chu Fang, national president of EYDA says they reached out to the displaced persons as a sign of fellowship “EYDA decided to extend a hand to the displaced persons in Esu fleeing the Fulani herdsmen in Gayama, Munkep, Munka and Itsem as a sign of fellowship. EYDA saw the need to share food items with the IDPs because most of them abandoned everything for their safety. In difficult times like this, we think that if we can only be of help even for a day, it would be good. We sincerely want peace to be restored in these areas so that our people can go back to their normal activities.” He told Cameroon Infotrend.

Mr Chu Fang went ahead to acknowledge the efforts of mediators who intervened to ensure an end to the conflict “I wish to thank our parents of ECUDA for their promptness on calling the Administration to look into this conflict with the urgency that it deserves. The SDO for Menchum was in Esu last week to assure our community that the government is working hard to stabilize the affected areas”

Attacks and counter attacks between Fulani Graziers and farmers along the borders, West of Cameroon and Nigeria caused displacement of persons. On the Cameroon side, Munkep, Munka, Gayama and Itsem which are few kilometers from the town of Esu were affected, causing displacement of persons. The conflict also affected Kashimilan, a border locality along Nigeria.
