Bishops Urge Cameroonians to Persevere in Prayer in Face of tough Socio-Economic times

Bishops of Cameroon are urging the faithful to “persevere in prayer” in the face of “the social and economic situation which is becoming increasingly austere and suffocating for the poorest”.
The bishops were concerned about rising prices of commodities with corresponding rising cost of living.

Speaking to the Press, His Grace Andrew Nkea, President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon- NECC elaborated on the subject “We have reflected on the socio-economic problems that we have and we have put all these in prayers and we want to continue to move ahead in tranquility. We have looked at the involvement of the laity in our midst and we are hoping that the church would continue to open up with the involvement of the lay faithful” he said

The call for prayer and tolerance was one of the main points that featured in the final communique of the 46th National Episcopal Conference. The conference took place in Ebolowa, Cameroon from 7th to 14th January 2023, attended by bishops from all Dioceses in Cameroon.

Also in the final communique at the close of the 46th NECC, bishops resolved to explore “Predicate Evangelium” an apostolic constitution issued by Pope Francis. The communique states inter alia that exploring this constitution would enable the episcopate “to reform the Church and affiliate institutions in order to make them effective instruments of evangelisation today”

They also reflected on the care of orphans and vulnerable children in Cameroon.

The 46th National Episcopal Conference was hosted by His Lordship Philippe Alain Mbarga, Bishop of Ebolowa.

During the weeklong convention, Mass was celebrated daily where bishops prayed for peace. They gave thanks to God for the period spent by outgoing Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea Julio Murat. They also prayed for late Pope emeritus, Benedict XVI.

The closing Mass of the 46th NECC, at Saint Anna and Joachim Cathedral, Ebolowa was attended by lay faithful, religious, state and traditional officials. Atanga Nji Paul, Minister of Territorial Administration represented President Paul Biya.

Next bishop conference is programmed for 6th to 13th January 2024, Diocese of Maroua-Mokolo.
