Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has died at age 95.
The Holy See Press Office announced that the Pope Emeritus died at 9:34 AM Saturday, December 31st, 2022 in his residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery where he was residing after resigning from the Petrine ministry in 2013.
The German pope, formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was elected in 2005 as a doctrinal conservative, but stunned the world by resigning in 2013, the first to do so in centuries.
Benedict XVI with original name Joseph Alois Ratzinger was born April 16, 1927.
He was a German theologian who will be remembered as the first pope in 600 years to resign.
