UNIVERSITY OF BAMENDA: STRIKE BEGINS DEC 4 AGAINST ATTEMPTED MURDER OF DON AND KIDNAP OF ANOTHER ON HEELS OF GROWING SECURITY CONCERNS

A strike action by affiliates of the University of Bamenda agreed by an executive committee of the institution  shall run  Dec 4th -5th 2019. The information is  contained in a communique for a solidarity strike action. The strike is provoked by attempts to assasinate Professor Tata Simon Ngenge lecturer and Director of studies at the Higher Teacher Training College  and abduction of Dr Ami Nyoh Hycinth, lecturer and Head of Division of Administration and Finance at the Higher Teacher Training College. The incident happened Dec 3rd 2019 on the stretch of road known as Bambui Bambili C Bend. 


   
According to the communique, the University Community was assured beefed up security during a high level meeting with the security situation of the institution on agenda.

The meeting was chaired by the governnor of the Northwest region at the University of Bamenda Campus on the 19th of November 2019 and attended by top management, deans and directors of schools and faculties, the executive committee of the University Chapter of the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education (NUTHE) and representatives of support staffs and students.

The communique notes that permanent security teams are yet to be installed at the Bambui Bambili C Bend and the Apostolic Junction, which has not helped as there have been continuation in the wave of insecurity.

Those to go on strike are requesting the government to put in place permanent security measures for safety of staff and students.

The University of Bamenda has recorded several cases of kidnap and killing of both staff and students in the wake of the Cameroon Anglophone crisis.

Assaults take place both on campus and on the road to the school. The Apostolic Junction/Bambui Bambili C Bend is one among many notorious areas with a high wave of violence.

The University of Bamenda’s main campus is in Bambili, Tubah subdivision,  Mezam Division, Northwest region Cameroon.
